Insight: I'm

Selling Point: A series of paradoxes and misguided cliches.

On Recording for YouTube: I recorded this while in my senior year of college. Sitting in my backyard in Charlotte, NC (before class), I battled wind, but was determined to finish recording this poem. When it comes to recording poetry, this was the first time I ventured outside of the house as well as edited multiple shots together.

Press Release: "Make Me a Doorway" / October Festivals (2012)

INDIE SHORT FILM “MAKE ME A DOORWAY” TO BE SCREENED AT TWO FESTIVALS IN OCTOBER

FILM, NARRATED BY POET ALEXZENIA DAVIS, HEADS TO THE CO-KISSER FILM FESTIVAL AND THE VISIBLE VERSE FILM FESTIVAL

Los Angeles, CA (September 13, 2012)—Poet Alexzenia Davis’ work as part of the experimental short film, "Make Me a Doorway,” will gain a brand new audience as it heads to two festivals this October. The short film will screen at the 2nd annual Co-Kisser film festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 6.  Additionally, it has been selected for screening at the Visible Verse film festival in Vancouver on October 13.

A compelling examination of self-awareness, “Make Me a Doorway” delves into topics such as memory, intimacy, and true understanding. Davis, pens a brave exploration into the experiences and visuals captured by filmmaker, Jesse Russell Brooks. In a true collaboration between writer and filmmaker, "Make Me a Doorway" defines the power of self-discovery while considering what photography makes of love lost, ultimately revealing how these reflections transform us. The film screened at the Black Women in Film Festival in June, and more recently, the Peachtree Village International Film Festival.

Davis, a native of New York City, released her first book, “Would You Love Me?” in December 2011. She is currently working on her second book, expected for release in late 2012.

Insight: God's Nature

Selling Point: Has God ever spoken to you?

On Recording for YouTube: I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but I'm glad that I didn't look directly into the camera. This is one of those poems that I'd rather you close your eyes and receive.

Insight: The Alarm*ing

Selling Point: A call to action.

On Recording for YouTube: The effect used is similar to the one I used in the very first poem I ever posted to YouTube ("I Don't Like the Government"), however the colors are brighter. I love that because it provides such a contrast between the visuals and the message. I decided to include the Alfred Lord Tennyson quote at the end because it was so fitting.

Selling Point: Bold stands.

On Recording for YouTube: I wanted to choose the proper effect, music, and font. It's so important to let the proper emotion seep through in all aspects when editing.

Insight: What Melody a Music Makes

Posted in: 2007

Selling Point: I used 93 song titles in this poem. In writing the poem, I wanted to implement wordplay while retaining context.

On Recording for YouTube: I actually didn't plan on singing any of the song titles. I posted the poem on a couple of websites before I even started recording YouTube videos (remember Sconex?). The titles were always the focus, but since I was merely posting text, I would just bold them. Deciding to sing during the recording was impromptu and really hard. I was trying not to have too many takes.

Press Release: "Would You Love Me?" (2011)

POET, ALEXZENIA DAVIS, DEBUTS FIRST BOOK

New York, NY (December 2011)From the heart of poet Alexzenia Davis comes Would You Love Me?—a book of heartfelt verses that beg that very question to be answered.

The book—a 24 page, fully illustrated, poetic piece—speaks to an exhilarating love that demands respect. It is beautifully written and touches the spirit with its pure and honest voice. The author delves into her inner emotions, ultimately pressing the idea of true and undeniable love; even under unfavorable circumstances. Past the initial interrogation, she explores the possibilities of a love so limitless...it’s daring. Although there is a hint of vulnerability in her words, the poem portrays much of the inner emotional strength that is present in all women.

Mature women have exclaimed, "How did that child get into my head?" And its message has not been lost on men either, one of whom expressed that he has, "... read many poems about love-- but that book..." The illustrations are originals rendered as described by the author to an artist, and the gold page backgrounds in full color bleed add elegance to her eloquence. The book cover is red with gold lettering and a gold bow—a cover that aptly resembles a gift.

Alexzenia Davis is a 2010 graduate of a historically black college—Johnson C. Smith University. Would You Love Me? is published through Xlibris Corporation, and is currently available for sale on the publishers website, xlibris.com, as well as Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com
