Press Release: "Make Me a Doorway" / BAM (2013)

INDIE SHORT FILM “MAKE ME A DOORWAY” TO BE SCREENED AT THE NEW VOICES IN BLACK CINEMA FILM FESTIVAL

FILM WILL SCREEN ON FEBRUARY 18 AS PART OF THE SHORT FILM SHOWCASE

Los Angeles, CA (January 25, 2013)—The experimental short film, "Make Me a Doorway,” is heading to the New Voices in Black Cinema Film Festival presented by BAMcinĂ©matek. The short will be screened on February 18 at 4pm as part of the Short Film showcase. The showing will serve as the New York premiere for the film, which screened at several festivals nationally and internationally throughout 2012.

A compelling examination of self-awareness, “Make Me a Doorway” delves into topics such as memory, intimacy, and true understanding. Spoken word poet and Brooklynite, Alexzenia Davis, pens a brave exploration into the experiences and visuals captured by filmmaker, Jesse Russell Brooks. In a true collaboration between writer and filmmaker, "Make Me a Doorway" defines the power of self-discovery while considering what photography makes of love lost, ultimately revealing how these reflections transform us. Ever present, as well, are the silent, but moving, performances of actresses, Erika Ewing and Laila Petrone.

“Make Me a Doorway” was released virally in April 2012 and screened at the Black Women in Film festival in June. This August, it screened at the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia and was met with positive reviews. It has garnered attention from a host of online sites, consequently developing a buzz within film and poetry communities alike.

The third annual New Voices in Black Cinema Film Festival will also be presented by the Fort Greene-based ActNow Foundation. Reflecting the wide spectrum of views and themes within the African diasporan communities in Brooklyn and beyond, the series features 10 New York premieres and special guests at nearly every screening. Home to ActNow programs since 2009, BAMcinématek continues this partnership by providing a showcase for new and established voices in black independent cinema.
